Family Issues and Healing
The "family of origin experience" in our substance abuse treatment program is about the healing of family relationships. We all grew up in a family system that was less than perfect. We did learn how to survive in life, sometimes in the face of great adversity. It is necessary for the healing of addictive behaviors, to address the behaviors we experienced growing up. At Renaissance Malibu, this is done though the family program component of our substance abuse program.
In the family program we come together, clients and family members, to heal the wounds that keep us from having healthy lives and relationships. The program brings understanding, acceptance, and forgiveness. This is achieved by participating in experiential processes that engage deeply held beliefs, our feelings, and the healing of our wounds. At Renaissance Malibu's substance abuse center, we have seen our clients and their families' lives transformed, as healing occurs.
We ask our clients to bring photographs of themselves and other family members as children. Family photos are welcome.

As our clients begin a program of recovery from chemical dependencies, they must also confront and root out the codependencies that they and their families have acquired through the years. Family behavior patterns that include codependency, often continue from generation to generation, whether there is an active chemical addiction or not. As an important part of a substance abuse program, therapy for codependency sheds light on the dysfunctional life patterns that have been built upon layers of guilt and secrets accumulated within individuals over many years of substance abuse. Psychologists believe that codependency develops from a hunger for love that can be transmitted down through generations.
