PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATIONS

Often the disease of chemical dependency manifests with other psychiatric conditions and personality disorders which need to be addressed in order to bring about the best possible outcome. Each client, therefore, will have an initial psychiatric evaluation, and if further testing is indicated, will have access to a Clinical Psychologist. Proper management of these conditions reduces relapses and provides a stable foundation for ongoing health and happiness.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Often people enter treatment with their ability to trust themselves and others severely shaken. Fear, grief, shame and secrets all play a role in keeping us cut off from ourselves and life. By working with a trained therapist in individual sessions, you can uncover hidden aspects of yourself that are preventing true healing, and begin to reestablish trust and honesty in your life. At Renaissance Malibu we offer two individual sessions per week in addition to other group and individual activities. By providing this balance you have the greatest chance for success.

GROUP THERAPY

In contrast to many programs that emphasize only group or individual therapy, at Renaissance Malibu we offer a balance. Addictions are often characterized as "diseases of isolation," and learning healthy ways to connect and communicate with others is critical for ongoing recovery. Being able to access a positive, life affirming sense of community is not only something we all crave but is necessary for mental health. At Renaissance Malibu we offer a wide range of group therapies and activities to help nurture this aspect of your life.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an information processing therapy shown to be very helpful in resolving past trauma. During EMDR you will address past and present experiences in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. For more information on EMDR click here.

BRAINSPOTTING

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with BioLateral sound, which is deep, direct, powerful yet focused and containing. Brainspotting identifies activated eye positions designated as Brainspots. Located through either one or both eyes, Brainspots are observed from either the "inside window" of the client's felt sense and/or the "outside window" of the client's reflexive responses (i.e., blinks, eye twitches or wobbles, pupil dilation, quick breaths and subtle body shifts).

EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY

Equine assisted therapy is a therapeutic approach which utilizes horses as a tool for emotional growth and learning. Individuals learn about themselves and others by interacting with horses, and then process the resulting feelings, behaviors, and patterns. Horses have the ability to mirror what human body language is telling them and teach humans about their interactions with others.

ART THERAPY

As children we are naturally creative, but our expressiveness is often cut off as we experience negative judgments from self and others. A vibrant creativity is at the heart of a positive experience of life; but often, one's creativity is lost in the storm of addictive behaviors. Re-establishing an awareness of your natural creativity is an important part of your healing journey.

DETOX

When you first arrive at Renaissance Malibu, you will meet with your physician, who will take a medical history and perform a physical examination. When necessary, a detoxification protocol is begun and carried out under medical supervision. Every effort is taken to make this phase of treatment as comfortable as possible. Included in the psychopharmacological options are SUBOXONE to support with the craving aspect of detoxification and to enable a clearer focus on the beginning of your long term recovery process.

NUTRITION

Our world-class chef will ensure that the gourmet meals offered are suited to your dietary needs. This is done while maintaining the highest quality of preparation and presentation.

PHYSICAL TRAINER

Exercise is an integral part of maintaining a healthy connection to life. Each client is provided with a personal trainer, who develops individual exercise plans, and works directly with you during your exercise session.

YOGA

Yoga is a time tested discipline designed to promote the unification of mind/body/spirit while liberating individuals from unhealthy beliefs they may hold. It is a powerful healing approach show to be a positive adjunct to recovery work.

MASSAGE

Massage offers many benefits to individuals going through major life transitions. In addition to the relaxing and soothing sensation it brings, it also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system to rid the body of toxins. When properly integrated, massage can help restore the individual physically, mentally and spiritually.

SWEAT LODGE CEREMONIES

Sweat Lodge ceremonies have been performed throughout human history for physical detoxification, emotional purification, and spiritual connection. The Sweat Lodge ceremonies provide several invaluable therapeutic opportunities, including recognizing and overcoming habitual responses to fear and self-judgment, mobilizing new copying responses for these common relapse triggers and moving from an intellectualized and rationalized expression to a more authentic, feeling-based expression.

NATIVE AMERICAN / WISDOM TEACHINGS

It is extraordinary to realize that the recovery movement is less than a century old. It was not until the twentieth century that addiction was generally recognized as a disease, and even now we are only beginning to understand the nature of that disease and its treatment. While many are content with existing models of recovery, many more are looking for other ways to strengthen and enrich recovery.

In our search, we look both to the latest research on human behavior, and to the ancient wisdom traditions. These teachings are not a religion but offer a sophisticated model of human psychology, the sickness of our minds, and how that sickness can be healed. Their practices include many beautiful ceremonies to help us become more aware of how we create suffering in our lives and how to practice forgiveness, surrender, express gratitude, love and celebrate life. People of all religious faiths have found them helpful in their spiritual lives, and a growing number of people in recovery have found them to be a powerful tool for staying sober and creating positive, meaningful lives. The teachings are completely compatible with twelve step approaches to recovery, and like twelve-step meetings, ask only that each person "take what is useful, and leave the rest."

ADVENTURE THERAPY

Adventure therapy is an experiential therapeutic approach utilizing cooperative group games, ropes courses, and employing challenge as an agent for change. Adventure therapy helps people engage in new (or rediscovered) behaviors and reconnect with their bodies. In adventure therapy, you are provided with real experiences that can be drawn upon to assist you in making the necessary changes in your life, as well as being an excellent avenue for creating community.

MEDITATION

High levels of stress often add fuel to the attraction of addictions. Focused training in contemporary meditation techniques will aid you in de-stressing your life. These techniques are also used to clarify your inner purpose.

FAMILY THERAPY

Family members and significant others engaged in the addiction process also need insight and education. Our Family Program will provide resources for education and an opportunity for healing. Our Family Program includes Family Therapy Sessions that address specific issues within your family as well as The Family of Origin Weekend experience.

HEALTHY BOUNDARIES

In our quest to be loved and accepted, we learn many behaviors which are destructive to growth and well being. Learning to establish healthy boundaries is critical for ongoing recovery. At Renaissance Malibu we offer groups to help in identifying where poor boundaries have created problems in your life and identify the tools to make necessary changes possible.

FAMILY OF ORIGIN

The Family of Origin Experiential Weekend is about the healing of family relationships. We all grew up in a family system that was less than perfect. We did learn how to survive in life, sometimes in the face of great adversity.

In the family program we come together, clients and family members, to heal the wounds that keep us from thriving in our lives. The program brings understanding, acceptance, and forgiveness. This is achieved by participating in experiential processes that engage the core issues of life: deeply held beliefs, our feelings, and the healing of our wounds.

Please bring photographs of yourself and other family members as children. Family photos are welcome.
