How Do We Fall into Chemical Addictions?
Anyone can fall into substance abuse or chemical addictions, regardless of education, economic status, or family background. However, we find that many people are predisposed to chemical addictions, or addictive or co-dependent relationships by family patterns that are passed on from generation to generation. These patterns are made up of misbeliefs and judgments that are created about self, others, relationships, and the addiction of choice. An essential part of residential drug treatment is the treatment of these patterns and issues. At Renaissance Malibu Residential Treatment Center, we have group counseling, as well as individual counseling that enables our clients to heal these patterns as part of our residential treatment program.
Misbeliefs vs. New Beliefs
As our clients go through our residential treatment program, we give them new beliefs that replace, in a healthy way, the misbeliefs and patterns of addiction.
Part of these new beliefs involve encouraging the client to take their power back. Though we encourage them to admit that they are out of control and powerless over their addiction, they now have the power to take charge of their lives and to stop being dependent on substances or other people. This is important as they progress through residential drug treatment.
As the clients in our residential treatment center examine their beliefs, addictions, and dependent behavior, we encourage them to become completely honest with themselves and others. As they are open to the truth, that truth will bring healing, a key focus of our residential treatment program.
We help our residential treatment clients let go of shame, guilt, and any behavior that keeps them from loving themselves and others. When our clients begin to share with another person the things for which they feel shame and guilt, they begin a new road towards emotional freedom.
Likewise, as in the 12 Steps, when our clients make a list of people they may have harmed and people who have harmed them, and take steps to make amends, they are taking further steps towards healing in our residential drug treatment program.
