Ecstasy Is Not a 'Safe' Drug

Abuse of MDMA, commonly referred to as ecstasy, first became common in the "rave" and all-night party scene. More than three-quarters of the patients who came to emergency departments mentioning ecstasy abuse as a factor in their admission in 2001 were age 25 and under, suggesting that ecstasy abuse is used predominantly by adolescents and young adults.

Ecstasy abuse can lead to tolerance, dependence and ecstasy addiction. A survey of young adult and adolescents found that 43 percent of those who reported a history of ecstasy abuse met the accepted criteria for dependence, as evidenced by continued ecstasy use despite physical or psychological harm, withdrawal effects, and tolerance. Almost 60 percent of people who abuse ecstasy report withdrawal symptoms, including fatigue, loss of appetite, depressed feelings, and trouble concentrating.
