Ecstasy Abuse
Ecstasy Is Not a 'Safe' Drug
Abuse of MDMA, commonly referred to as ecstasy, first became common in the "rave" and all-night party scene. Ecstasy has gained a deceptive reputation as a "safe" drug, which perhaps explains its rapid rise in popularity and, consequently, increased ecstasy abuse. Ecstasy has now spread to a wide range of settings and demographic subgroups.
Myths abound about both the acute effects and long-term consequences of ecstasy abuse, but one fact is clear: ecstasy is far from benign. For example, ecstasy can cause a dangerous increase in body temperature that can lead to cardiovascular failure. Ecstasy abuse can also increase heart rate, blood pressure, and heart wall stress. Symptoms of ecstasy overdose include high blood pressure, faintness, panic attacks, and in severe cases, a loss of consciousness, and seizures. A number of studies show that long-term, heavy ecstasy abuse results in cognitive deficits, including problems with memory.
Reports of ecstasy abuse in drug related cases in hospital emergency departments increased 94% from 1999 to 2001; 86% of these cases also involved other substances, such as alcohol, methadone, cocaine and heroin. More than three-quarters of the patients who came to emergency departments mentioning ecstasy abuse as a factor in their admission in 2001 were age 25 and under, suggesting that ecstasy abuse is used predominantly by adolescents and young adults.
Does Ecstasy Abuse Lead to Ecstasy Addiction?
Ecstasy abuse can lead to tolerance, dependence and ecstasy addiction. A survey of young adult and adolescents found that 43 percent of those who reported a history of ecstasy abuse met the accepted criteria for dependence, as evidenced by continued ecstasy use despite physical or psychological harm, withdrawal effects, and tolerance. Almost 60 percent of people who abuse ecstasy report withdrawal symptoms, including fatigue, loss of appetite, depressed feelings, and trouble concentrating.

Evaluating Ecstasy Abuse Treatment Centers
Any rehab center that boasts first-rate ecstasy abuse treatment should be entirely able - and willing -- to supply answers to any and all of your questions. Do not be timid in asking, and be sure that you are comfortable with the answers.
First, determine the accreditation of the ecstasy abuse treatment center you are considering. Remarkably, there are some rehabs that have no accreditation, often because their ecstasy addiction treatment methods are questionable. Some of the more dubious California rehab centers even state that there is a "simple answer" to ecstasy abuse or addiction, and that dealing with emotional, relationship and family issues is not necessary. Be aware that this approach is short-sited, counter-productive, and entirely inaccurate.
If you or a loved one is considering a rehab for ecstasy addiction or abuse treatment, you should inquire:
. Is the clinical staff fully licensed - not merely certified?
. Do they specialize in ecstasy addiction and abuse?
. Can they point to a history of success in ecstasy addiction and ecstasy abuse treatment?
. Do they have ecstasy relapse prevention and continuing care programs?
. Does the ecstasy abuse program offer a continuum of care, where you can transition to lesser or greater levels of care if you need them?
. Does the program offer a wide range of ancillary professionals and activities to further accommodate your specialized needs?
. Is the ecstasy abuse program structure flexible enough to accommodate personal needs?
. Does the ecstasy abuse treatment program offer a balance of group and individual activities?
. Does the program offer specialized treatment tracks for your needs?
. Does the ecstasy abuse treatment take place in an institutional setting or offer a beautiful, serene environment conducive to healing?
Other questions that are important to ask when considering ecstasy abuse treatment: If you are currently seeing a therapist for ecstasy abuse or addiction, what is his or her opinion? Does the ecstasy abuse treatment center address dual diagnosis needs? What is its drug treatment philosophy? Is the cost of residential treatment "all inclusive"? Is medical insurance accepted?
At RENAISSANCE MALIBU, we have the right answers. We have a documented, long-standing history of success in both alcohol and ecstasy abuse treatment and will proudly share with you our innovative Programs, our philosophy, our accreditation, and our experienced staff's impeccable credentials.
