Alcohol and drug addictions, co-dependency, Co-Occurring Disorders (Dual Diagnosis) and the trauma received in the process of living, are addressed in our residential treatment program and residential treatment center.

What is Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis is the clinical term meaning that a client has both a substance abuse disorder, and an additional disorder, such as: depression, anxiety, personality, or mood disorders. In order for these clients to be effectively served, they should be treated by a licensed staff specializing in dual diagnosis treatment.

Examples of Dual Diagnosis

Often clients will try to "self-medicate" with alcohol or other drugs, to deal with the effects of another problem. This results in "dual diagnosis" for these clients. One disorder which may cause clients to self-medicate is panic disorder. Panic disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. In addition, clients with this diagnosis also have persistent concern over having more panic attacks, and worry about the implications of the attacks. Also, they show significant behavior changes related to the attacks. While some drugs may cause a panic attack, these clients will use alcohol or other drugs to try to minimize the symptoms and/or occurrence of the attacks. Our credentialed, professional staff at Renaissance Malibu's California Dual Diagnosis Treatment Center are trained to help these clients heal both the substance abuse problem, and the panic disorder.

A diagnosis that seems to be often misused by the general public is "bipolar disorder." Bipolar disorder is another condition which may cause some clients to abuse drugs and/or alcohol in order to minimize the symptoms of the disorder, or prevent it from occurring altogether. Our dual diagnosis recovery program can help those clients with not only the bipolar disorder, but the substance abuse as well.

True bipolar disorder contains both depression and the occurrence of hypomanic episodes. These hypomanic episodes are the "up" part of the "mood swing" pattern associated with bipolar disorder. A manic episode, as they are called, is a time of persistently elevated, or irritable mood lasting for at least 4 days. There is hyperactivity; a decreased need for sleep; the client is more talkative; flight of ideas or racing thoughts; and involvement in pleasurable activities that are high risk. These high risk activities might include unrestrained buying sprees or sexual activity. As you can see, this is more than the popular definition of a "mood swing." The manic episode is then followed by a period of major depression, which usually lasts at least two weeks. The trained counselors at our dual diagnosis treatment center can assist clients with the manic episodes, the depression that follows, and the substance abuse involved.

Major depression is another condition for which clients may abuse alcohol or drugs to self-medicate. This time of depression lasts most of the day, nearly every day for at least a two-week period. There also may be much less interest in or pleasure in all activities; significant weight gain or loss; insomnia, or an increase in sleep; fatigue and feelings of worthlessness. There are no manic episodes. The client may abuse alcohol or other drugs to "numb the pain," or relieve the symptoms of the depression.

Individuals may experience occurring "mood swings," where depressive episodes are followed by a period of non-depression, or feeling better. This, as previously noted, is vastly different from true bipolar disorder.

Dual diagnosis which includes major depression, is very common. Our California Dual Diagnosis Treatment Facility Program is well-prepared to assist clients with the depression and the substance abuse that may accompany it.
