How Do We Fall into Chemical or Relationship Addictions?
Anyone can fall into substance abuse or chemical addictions, regardless of education, economic status, or family background. However, we find that many people are predisposed to chemical addictions, or addictive or codependent relationships by family patterns that are passed on from generation to generation. An essential part of drug addiction treatment is the treatment of these patterns and issues. At Renaissance Malibu, we have group counseling, as well as individual counseling that enables our clients to heal these patterns as part of our drug addiction treatment.
Family Rules and Patterns
The system of rules and patterns, communicated by parents and relatives has been developed in response to some problem such as alcoholism, mental illness or some other "secret" or "problem."
Examples of dysfunctional rules set-up within families may include:
. It's not okay to talk about problems.
. Feelings should not be expressed openly; keep feelings to yourself.
. Communication is best if indirect; one person acts as messenger between two others.
. Be strong, good, right, perfect all the time.
. Make us proud - communicated with expectations that are more than realistic, or impossible.
. Don't be "selfish."
. Do as I say, not as I do.
. It's not okay to play or be playful.
. Don't rock the boat.
Many families have one or more of these rules in place within the family. However, when more than one rule is "enforced" in the family, especially when enforced very strongly, these kinds of rules greatly inhibit the healthy development of self-esteem, and coping skills. As a result, children can develop unhealthy behavior characteristics, problems solving techniques, and reactions to situations in adult life. Providing a safe, healing environment in which to deal with these issues is an important part of our alcohol and drug addiction treatment at Renaissance Malibu.
The Effect of the Rules
These rules and patterns may also be part of why some begin to emulate the chemical addiction behavio their parents have, or cause others to fall into what are called "codependent" relationships. The counselors in our drug addiction treatment center are specially trained to help our clients address and heal these behaviors that are part of these patterns.
The definition of codependency describes a dysfunctional pattern of living and problem-solving developed during childhood by family rules. One of many definitions of codependency is "a set of maladaptive, compulsive behaviors learned by family members in order to survive in a family which is experiencing emotional pain and stress."
Because these behaviors are developed in order to survive in a family where there is emotional pain and stress, there is an inability for a person to develop behaviors in which their needs are actually met. Many of these behaviors are actually against the will or conscious desires of the family members, but the family system has taught them that the behavior is necessary for survival. Often the causes of emotional pain and stress in the family are: chemical dependency; chronic mental illness; chronic physical illness; physical abuse; sexual abuse; emotional abuse; divorce; hypercritical or non-loving environment.
As family members grow into adulthood, those with families exhibiting these patterns often tend to fall into relationships with people who are unreliable, controlling, emotionally unavailable, and/or needy. Often individuals from this type of family get involved in relationships with chemically dependent people, continuing the cycle. The codependent person will likely try to provide and control everything within the new relationship without addressing their own needs or desires; setting themselves up for continuation of not being fulfilled. It is absolutely necessary that these patterns be addressed in alcohol and drug addiction treatment, so that these patterns, and the addictions that accompany them, do not continue.
Treating Codependency and Dysfunctional Family Patterns
As our clients begin a program of recovery from chemical dependencies, they must also confront and root out the codependencies that they and their families have acquired through the years. An important part of drug addiction treatment, therapy for codependency, sheds light on the dysfunctional life patterns that have been built upon layers of guilt and secrets accumulated within individuals over many years of substance abuse. Psychologists believe that codependency develops from a hunger for love that can be transmitted down through generations. There are answers to healing this hunger through treatment for codependency and healthy relationships in our drug addiction treatment center.`
